Gymnasia is the best gym I've ever been to...and I'm excited to see what I'll be able to achieve year after year.

Gymnasia is the best gym I've ever been to, hands down. Before becoming a member, I tried various other fitness fads, and none of them truly worked. I was literally spinning in circles at choreographed spin classes with no results. I tried barre classes where I never felt myself getting stronger or progressing, and while I absolutely loved yoga classes, they weren't helping me achieve my fitness goals. What's different about Gymnasia is that in each class you're working towards achievable, personalized goals- with an injury prevention mindset. Little by little I noticed myself getting stronger and healthier. When I started regularly attending classes, I had a bad bout of plantar fasciitis alongside chronic ankle sprains. Walking, let alone hopping and swinging kettlebells seemed like it would be crippling. The coaches at Gymnasia worked with my physical limitations and modified exercises for me to fully participate without injuring myself. After about 3-4 months of regular attendance, my plantar was all but gone! My feet and ankles are much stronger, and I can walk long distances without worrying about pain the next day. I've also lost a considerable amount of weight which is a nice bonus! Not only are the workouts fantastic, but the community atmosphere is wonderful. I'm not a natural athlete, and team sports were never really my thing. I appreciate that I can work out in a group atmosphere, but go at my own pace- all the while being encouraged on by everyone else in the room. I've now been a member for just under 7 months, and am so thrilled with my experience at this gym! I'm excited to see what I'll be able to achieve year after year.

I am doing things I never thought I could do!

I am a 57 year old woman that has been overweight all her life. My weight has been at a plateau for about 25 years, 5 pounds up/5 pounds down. I was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I tried weight loss programs over the years, spending tons of money without success. I tried gyms and spent more time telling myself why I didn’t feel like going than actually going (it’s too cold/it’s too hot/it’s too nice out!)

Since joining Gymnasia, in three months I have lost 10 pounds, my A1C has gone down to within normal range, my friends & coworkers are noticing the change in my shape. I believe I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. I actually almost have a waist!

Dee is our trainer, my husband & I go twice a week, she has given me confidence and she pushes me to do the best I can. I am doing things I never thought I could do, swing & dead lift kettle bells, crawl backwards on the floor, hanging from a bar, swinging from rings. As an overweight child I never physically played, I could do not what the other kids could do.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dee & Gymnasia, the staff is so warm & friendly, I feel safe when exercising and it’s fun. Best of all I feel so much better and I’m seeing results. The best two hours of the week are the two hours I spend training with my husband & Dee.

I was reflecting on the movement and strength work I've been doing and it's dawned in me that it started off as the desire to alleviate knee pain, but has naturally evolved into something wholly different and more profound. It strikes me that when approached consciously movement work is really a journey of the self discovery of the intersection of mind and body. There are the conventional fitness elements of strengthening, and expanding range of motion through stretching and movement patterns, but there's simultaneously a deeper internal process of surrendering body tension, letting go, and passing artificial psychological barriers.  All of this has lead to greater intelligence and understanding of how my body is designed to support itself and move.

Thank you for being my guide through this process! It's truly a labor of love for me the student as it clearly is for you the teacher.

Top 3 list of why I love G

After a lot of experience with different gyms, I have decided to write a Top 3 List of why I love G:

1. G provides a welcoming community that focuses on developing your strength and stamina, and never engages in negative body shaming or emphasizes the need to exercise to get "a perfect bikini body".

2. Through the power and strength exercises, I have learned to move and do everyday activities much more easily----hiking, shoveling snow, lifting furniture.

3. I have actually becoming stronger in ways I never knew I could, and have finally met my goal of being able to do the monkey bars in the playground.

Eating clean left me with more energy, less bloat, and clearer skin

It seems like we all want to lose that extra something. But I also needed a reality check about my daily BAD habits that were making me sluggish and bloated: the daily chocolate, coconut yogurt, and well I like my cocktails! I wanted to start by learning how to cut all that stuff out and then learn to only have them in moderation. I will only do it if it's good and as clean as possible. I did lose the weight, but I gained knowledge and the confidence to say no to the cheese and the sugar and the booze when in the past I didn't want to be "that Person". To me it's not worth eating crappy food.

I thought I was a pretty healthy eater before but now I am more aware and more dedicated to my nutrition goals. I continue to work on it, but I have gained healthier habits from the Food and Lifestyle program. When I really started reading labels I was blown away that so many things that I thought were good, but had high fructose corn syrup in them. I now obsessively read labels before consuming. I guess you can say the coaching created an overall awareness of what I consume. An awareness about what I put into my body, not just to lose weight but to be healthier. I think about what I put into my mouth and how it's going to affect me in the long run and whether or not it's really worth it.  If I end up eating a  really delicious burger and fries from red bird one night I'm not going to sweat it but I’m also not going to do that every night and I try to plan it so that all my other meals that day are super clean.

I also realized that I don't really need to lose weight that most of my extra was just bloat from eating and drinking crappy stuff. Eating clean leaves me with more energy, less bloat, and clearer skin. in fact, Friends noticed my glow after my first month.

I have tried things on my own before and but never made it a whole month without cheating. Having a coach made me accountable for my decisions and I wanted to make my mamma proud! Hahah...seriously though It was someone to talk to about what I was doing, share recipes and just to have that support really helped me. I literally did not cheat once in the entire 30 days. I don't think I could have done that without Deanna Coaching me.

Endless opportunities for improving my skills to incorporate in all aspects of my life.

I was initially intimidated to try GSC because I was nervous I would feel uncomfortable as a newcomer, and that I wouldn’t have the ability to keep up. I am so glad I decided to give it a try in spite of my reservations, since I was completely wrong. I immediately felt welcomed by the warm and supportive group of people. Much like in group sessions, there are always modifications to meet each person where they are with each skill, so I can go at my own pace.

Going to GSC is now a highlight of my week. I like to take with me what I have learned into my week and put it to good use, whether that be in a group session, moving my spine while sitting at my desk, or practicing my ankle mobility while waiting in traffic. I am so excited about the endless opportunities for improving my skills to incorporate in all aspects of my life.

I was introduced to Gymnasia through my wonderful former clarinet student Alison's emotional and physical life was transformed when she joined Gymnasia. Alison's enthusiasm propelled me into trying this unique gym.

Now, I can honestly say, I am a huge fan.

Each member is treated as an individual, each work out is designed for your needs and you are not in competition with anyone. This is not a quick fix. It is a thoughtful programmed plan to make you aware of your body and help you use all your muscles to their best advantage.

I entered training with arthritic knees and little flexibility. This summer I walked up and down the hills of Lisbon, Portugal with no pain and no knee braces. A huge improvement!

The culture of warmth and friendship in this gym is genuine. I look forward to learning more and gaining more inner strength. Thank you to my workout buddies that are now part of my family and of course the incredible coaches.

Deanna has helped me develop well-balanced healthy habits around exercising and eating right.

Simply put, I wanted to live a healthier lifestyle. At 44 and 258 pounds, my doctor reinforced what I knew was coming if I didn’t change habits. I was on the path to diabetes and heart disease. I found changing lifestyles very challenging. Fortunately, I found Gymnasia and my “food” coach Deanna. Food coach is a mislabel because Deanna is more than that. She is my health coach, there to educate, support, inspire and mentor me. Deanna has really helped me change my perspective, something flipped. I really have not been thinking about things as “I can’t have that treat” or “You HAVE to work out”. It has really changed to “ I WANT to be healthy because I’ll live a happier life”  and realizing when I am doing healthy things I feel better. This has led from dreading going to the gym to looking forward to it and from planning out of necessity to planning for opportunity.

My days don’t seem like an endless series of self-denial and will power.  I have not felt like I denied myself anything, I felt like I chose to be healthier. Deanna has helped me develop well-balanced healthy habits around exercising and eating right. I have lost 10 pounds in 5 weeks!

“Every year I put on about 10-15 lbs in the Fall and slowly lose it in the Spring. It’s been like this for as long as I can remember. I have tried Nutri Systems, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, counting calories, green smoothie cleanses etc…. You name it, I’ve tried it and always with the same result. The weight has come off but it has crept back on.

You know how people say you need to make a lifestyle change not diet to lose weight? Well that’s what Deanna has helped me do. I am not on a diet which means I am not hungry. When you are not hungry it’s easier to stay the course. The other extremely positive side effect of this lifestyle change is that I have lost 10 pounds in 5 weeks. Again, this is a super motivator to continue on the path. “Just 2 days before starting privates with Everett at Gymnasia, I had a in-body assessment done through a work place initiative and was very disappointed with the results.  Despite a very healthy vegan diet and tons of exercise daily, I have been unable to lose weight or see significant changes in my body. I’ve tried desperately in vein for almost 5 years now doing it on my own.  This is especially challenging for me emotionally because I work at a weight and health management company and help others to lose weight and exercise more every day – so why couldn’t I do it myself??

Anyway, I just had the assessment re-done after almost 4 weeks and I feel like the results were pretty amazing and all in less than a month!  I am literally floored by this.  Its clear to me that while I lead a healthy and active life, I haven’t been using my body in the most efficient way to burn calories or build muscle.  I’ve been spinning my wheels, so to speak, and I feel like I’m on the cusp of a big change and for that I am so grateful!

I don’t know what the next two months will bring with the 60 day challenge but I am feeling very hopeful and positive about making these changes for the first time in 5 years.  I can’t wait for the rest of the challenge, and hopefully my journey at Gymnasia beyond that as well.

I have been experiencing the incredible benefits of Gymnasia for about a year and a half now. Beyond the positive changes in my body (stamina, power, strength, and tone), I have experienced changes in my views of, relationship with, and confidence in my body.

But, I never would have anticipated applying those changes to my clinical practice as a psychologist. And yet, there it was – unexpectedly oozing into a session and influencing my work one morning. I had been meeting with someone who works as an athletic pro, teaching her particular sport to others. She has struggled with seeing it as a valued profession. After all, she is not, in her mind, doing work that “serves a greater good”.

And yet, as I listened to her, I knew that she is so much more than “just” a teacher and pro. She teaches so much more than the skills of the game. She gives her students an increased level of comfort in and self-confidence with their bodies. She increases their sense of proprioception – they are connected to and working with their bodies in a different way as a result of how she teaches them. As I pointed all this out to her, I realized that if it were not for what gymnasia has enabled in me, I might not have recognized the gifts she offers her students. I did though, and helped her to see it for herself. It was an “aha” moment for us both!

I started on my path with Gymnasia when my partner gifted me a pack of private coaching sessions (best gift, ever!). We had heard wonderful things about Josh and his team from friends in the yoga community, and my experience continues to exceed every expectation. As a physical therapist, I value the G philosophy of training patterns, rather than parts. The movement curriculum and functional approach to strengthening yield gains that apply well beyond the walls of Gymnasia. I’ve noticed more spring in my step, increased power in my pedal stroke, and a stronger brace through my core on the yoga mat.

Impressed by my own results and fueled by a thirst for knowledge, I jumped at the opportunity to participate in the Coach Training. The weekly sessions enabled me to learn fundamental movement patterns and integrate their variants through practice. I also built confidence in my ability to scale up and down the intensity and complexity continuums. The format of the training provided a balance of discussion and live practice that deepened my appreciation for fitness as a path best walked as a shared experience within the walls of sacred space.

“I am a mother of preschoolers and I was looking for a new place to keep myself in shape and sane. I was reluctant to re-join a regular gym because I get bored and I have a hard time coming up with a full body workout on my own, particularly one that I can complete in an hour.I stumbled across Gymnasia when I was headed to CVS and I gave it a try. Wow, it is perfect.

The studio is clean and filled with really interesting and different things: kettlebells, weighted bats (not their real name!), sandbags, etc. The classes are full of moves I have never done or even heard about before in all the boot camp and big gym classes I have done in the past. These are moves that engage my whole body and are different and interesting enough to engage my mind so that I am not gritting my teeth and thinking about what I will do after class. The owner Josh has a very diverse and amazing background in many different disciplines. He is completely approachable, as are all the instructors. I came in without knowing anything about what they were teaching and they all spent a lot of time showing me the proper way to do the moves. When I leave here, I always feel like I got in a great workout and I look forward to going back each time.

“My kids are in elementary school – it’s been a few years! – but I still work out at Gymnasia and love it.  I have seen this place grow into its own and I am so happy to be a part of the community here.  I am continually challenged, even after all these years, and I have definitely grown in my mastery of movement.  I am much more in tune with how my body moves and where my strength comes from.  That is useful in class and useful in everyday life.  I was reading a magazine to pass time at the salon the other day and I saw all these quotes about how people view exercise as this pill to swallow, these few minutes of awfulness to reap the benefits of their great body or whatever and I thought, “Wow! That is so not what I see it as.”  That would not be sustainable for me.  I am so happy to be at Gymnasia. Even on days when I am tired and have to convince myself to go – I go willingly and happily because I know that as crappy as I feel walking TO the door, it will all be better, and I will feel so much better, once I am IN that door.  I have never walked away from a class NOT feeling happy – and I don’t mean in a “I’m happy its over” kind of a way.  Gymnasia is a truly special place.  There is no quick word or slick phrase to get across immediately what it is.  I think that is because it is unique and it is built on a deep knowledge of many different disciplines, bringing the best of each.  It is a place you have to experience.  I am so glad I took the chance and walked in here all those years ago.”  ~Maggie A

“Ability I couldn’t even imagine & I’ve lost almost 20 pounds without dieting!”

I joined Gymnasia a few days shy of a significant birthday. I was overweight, over-stressed, out-of-shape and frankly, out-of-sorts about it all. I had been a runner and swimmer in my young adult days, but it had been years since I had been able to keep up with any regular exercise program. My knees ached, my confidence was low, and I struggled to find clothes I felt good in. I was eager to get in shape, but anxious about how the training would feel.

I started attending small groups three times a week, and within a short time, realized I didn’t have to force myself to go, but actually looked forward to each session. The movements were so new to me, and interesting in a way that challenged both my mind and body, and Josh and the other coaches were welcoming, and adept at explaining the various moves. Hard to believe – but I was actually having fun!

The other members I trained with were also very friendly and supportive; it quickly became apparent that this was a special community, in which coaches and teammates helped support and encourage each member.

It also helped that I felt so invigorated and just so damn good after the sessions. I was tired and even sore, for sure (thank you, push-ups and squats!) – but in a good way, like my body was waking up and being glad of it after too many years of relative inactivity.

And the compliments were pretty nice too. Though I wasn’t really dieting, the effects of the strength and movement training made me look slimmer and more fit and family and friends were noticing. I finally had to shop for new clothing in smaller sizes – for the first time in years!

Gymnasia Head Coach Josh Conway has created an amazing program and philosophy, with deep roots in both western and eastern disciplines. He is friendly, and approachable and has an impressive knowledge of the body, and of exercise, strength and movement patterns. He and his coaching team will meet you where you’re at – whether you’re a couch potato or competitive athlete – and thoughtfully coach you to make progress at your own level.

I am SO happy with my experience training at Gymnasia – it has been a real life-changer for meI have gained strength and ability I didn’t even imagine (I can deadlift, swing and snatch kettlebells, and do push-ups for the first time in my life!). I also have lost almost 20 pounds without really dieting.

Stairs are easier, my gait feels more fluid, and my knees are much less achy. More importantly, I am now more comfortable and confident in my body than I have been in years, maybe even decades.

It’s been just over a year since I joined, and I am thrilled to say that I am in the best shape of my life – not bad for having just turned 61! Thank you G coaches – you’re the best!

“I can do some mean pushups for the first time in my life!”

“My daughter and I joined Gymnasia at two different levels of fitness and experience.  She is a trained dancer and was looking to gain strength and a workout that would push her to a new fitness level and extend her athletic abilities.  I, on the other hand, was a gym drop-out and was looking for a program I would stick with and possibly even enjoy.  When we met with Josh the two of us both knew right away that this was something unique.  Surprisingly, we both left confident that this program would meet both of our very different goals.

Josh and all the coaches at Gymnasia are so knowledgeable and really push you to challenge yourself.  My daughter and I are amazed at the strides we have made, not only in our fitness but we see the results of our hard work in our every day lives. She is a stronger, more athletic dancer and I can do some mean pushups for the first time in my life!

While we started this program with the intentions of working out together, the Gymnasia community has made it easy for us to attend on our own, knowing there is always a friendly face to cheer you on and push you forward.

At other gyms I never really made any forward strides and I would quickly become frustrated and bored.  3 days a week at the Gymnasia has provided us with real tangible results that finally have me excited about exercise.  We are both so happy we joined.

“I shed my body image issues and gained a new outlook on fitness”

I’ve got some pretty severe body image issues that got a lot worse at the last gym I belonged to. It was a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) setup totally driven by results – weigh-ins, measurements, fat-pinches, etc.. I was encouraged by the program to get results – any results. Just before I switched, I was down to less than 20% body fat, but still got driven to reduce my measurements and surely I could cut more calories from my diet (I averaged 1200-1500 even with a pretty active lifestyle). I felt like I was fighting my body, fighting everyone else in the gym for these ridiculous competitions, always encouraged to do more than I did the last week, lift more weight, etc. Tighten this! Clench that! More! Harder! Faster!

I didn’t get hurt, but my body always hurt. I got tired of fighting. I’m so glad I found G. Thanks to G’s approach, I feel like I’m making moreprogress in appreciating my body and my abilities. It’s a goal to recognize how well it functions, and how I can improve it, and not obsess so much about the way it looks. So it’s not so much a *thing* I can do that I couldn’t before; it’s more a mental change.” ~Rachel

“I have been going to the Gymnasia for a little over a year and I love it. It takes a lot of me to say this because being active is not a natural thing for me. I generally prefer to sit or walk slowly than work out.

Before the Gymnasia, I belonged to a gym that I hardly ever went to. My wife was a member of this same gym and this still couldn’t get me to go very often. I just didn’t like the vibe there. When I did go to the gym, I would run on the treadmill, then do some resistance training on body parts that I enjoyed working on. This meant that I rarely did any leg or ab work.

I recognized that it was important to move my body and get exercise so I started searching. I found the Gymnasia by chance through an online search. I signed up for the trial and attended my first class. Wow, it was challenging. But I felt so great, so energized after it was all done. I had felt so great that I came back the next day for another class! I was a little sore but not as bad as I thought.

Each consequent class was challenging for me but I always felt great afterward. I noticed gains in strength and endurance after only a couple weeks. For me, that’s remarkable.

Each class is conducted in an interactive small group format. Everyone is friendly and supportive. We’re each doing the exercises at our own pace, taking breaks when we need to. We’re not trying to match anyone else’s pace. For me it’s like a form of meditation. I do the movements better when I’m fully present. And I’m encouraging myself to do more rather than being pushed to do something I’m not quite ready to do.

The movements engage my mind and body. My understanding is that we’re training our body parts to work together. So often in our lives we will do exercises or participate in activities that isolate one body part which if done enough can lead to imbalance. The movements we do at the Gymnasia enhance strength and endurance. So I get a more complete workout, naturally.

What I’ve been noticing more and more is that I’m inspired to move my body. I may be sitting at my desk at my office and then decide I want to get on the floor and roll, or hold myself in a plank position, or something else. I’ve also noticed that my posture is better and have tons more endurance and lung capacity than I had before. This is a big thing for me because as I said earlier, I tend to not want to move much.
